(Reuters) -Colgate-Palmolive cut its annual sales forecast on Friday, in a sign that rising economic uncertainty is reducing consumer spending on higher-priced items, even in essential categories such as oral and personal care.

The maker of Colgate toothpaste and Palmolive soap has been raising prices in most markets to counter the impact of U.S. tariffs, pushing shoppers towards cheaper alternatives.

While prices rose 2.3% during the third quarter, volumes fell 1.9%, compared to a year ago.

"Consumers still remain relatively weak across North America," said CEO Noel Wallace during the post-earnings call, adding that discount seeking is up, Hispanic traffic remains down and the U.S. household products category performance in September was softer than expected and weaker than prior months.

The company said it has also been taking a hit in Canada from the "Buy Canadian" movement, along with weaker demand in other regions, including Colombia, Central America as well as India.

Colgate said it continues to expect an impact of about $75 million from tariff-related costs.

The company imports raw materials such as vitamins and amino acids and makes toothpaste for the U.S. market in Mexico.

To fend off stiff competition from cheaper private-label brands, Colgate has ramped up its advertising and marketing efforts.

The company's quarterly adjusted gross profit margin decreased 190 basis points to 59.4% due to a hit from soaring costs related to raw and packaging materials.

Peer Procter & Gamble reported an upbeat quarter as consumers continued to pay higher prices for its beauty and hair-care products.

Colgate now expects annual organic sales growth to be 1% to 2%, after estimating it to be at the low end of a 2% to 4% rise.

Shares of the company were marginally down in morning trading.

"Given the stock underperformance, we think investors were already bracing for a reduction in guidance," said Andrea Teixeira, analyst with J.P.Morgan.

It posted quarterly net sales of $5.13 billion, in line with analysts' estimates, as per data compiled by LSEG.

Quarterly adjusted profit of 91 cents per share was above estimates of 89 cents per share.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Jerami Grant made a pair of free throws with 1.4 seconds left and the Portland Trail Blazers rallied for a 109-107 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Friday night in the NBA Cup opener for both teams.

Denver led 81-71 going into the fourth quarter. With 27.7 seconds left and the Nuggets in front 107-105, Grant hit a pair of free throws for the Blazers to tie it.

After a scramble on the other end, Shaedon Sharpe blocked Aaron Gordon's jumper and the Nuggets were called for a shot clock violation, giving Portland the ball with three seconds left.

A foul was called on Gordon and Grant made the free throws. Nikola Jokic missed a 13-foot jumper as the clock ran out.

Jokic had 21 points and 14 rebounds but fell just short of his fifth straight triple double to open the season with nine assists. Jokic went into the game tied with Oscar Robertson (1961-62) and Russell Westbrook (2020-21) for most consecutive triple-doubles to start the season with four.

Grant had 16 points off the bench for the Blazers, who won their third straight. Deni Avdija led Portland with 23 and Sharpe had 19.

Jamal Murray added 22 points for the Nuggets. The loss snapped Denver's three- game winning streak.

Murray was questionable with left calf soreness but started and the Nuggets went up 30-18 on his layup. Avdija's layup tied it for Portland at 41 but the Nuggets went into halftime with a 57-53 lead.

The Blazers briefly pulled in front 68-67 on Kris Murray's layup before Denver's 9-0 run to end the third quarter for a 10-point lead.

There was a lengthy delay at the end of the first quarter because of a shot clock malfunction at the Moda Center.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kyle Larson is stuck in a 23-race NASCAR losing streak and really hasn't done much better in his sprint car, either. His momentum hit a wall after his failed second attempt to run the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

Larson crashed and failed to finish both races in a demoralizing hit he didn't realize he'd carry for so many months. He has never experienced a slump like this, even when he drove for Chip Ganassi Racing and only won six races.

"Even when I was not ever winning, I could still go to sprint car racing and win and that would keep your confidence in yourself that you can do it," Larson said. "This year when they both took a dip, you're like 'Man this sucks' and like 'How am I going to get out of this?' and 'Like, is it me?' 'Is is the cars?' 'Is is the bad luck?'

"You're just down, searching for answers and sticking through it. Then it slowly started turning around, maybe not as quickly as I would like, but quietly we were getting better and now the NASCAR stuff? We're peaking at the right time."

Larson will race Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron, and Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe on Sunday in NASCAR's winner-take-all championship finale. He's the only driver in the final four with a championship, the one he won in 2021, his first season at Hendrick.

Hamlin, Briscoe and then Byron all won to earn their spots in the field, while Larson failed to win in the playoffs and earned the final berth through points. Even so, he likes how the No. 5 Chevrolet is running the last nine week and likes his chances Sunday.

"I feel like we can win at any point," Larson said noting he'd run in the top-five the last month. "I feel like that's back to where we are. To me, it doesn't seem like it's been that long since we've won because we've at least been contending to win the last four races."

Larson has one previous victory at Phoenix, in the 2021 championship race he won. He has three top-fours in five races since.

William Byron

Another trip to the championship, another middle seat on a commercial flight for Byron.

Two years after Byron needed to win at Martinsville Speedway to make the playoffs, he did it again this year. And just like any NASCAR driver who doesn't own an airplane, he had to quickly find a way to get to Phoenix Raceway.

Hendrick Motorsports wasn't leaving in time to get Byron to Texas, so he once again booked a commercial flight.

And yes, the reigning two-time Daytona 500 champion was once again in a middle seat.

The only Charlotte native in a sport based predominantly in the city and its suburbs, Byron breezed his way through his home airport and the most he was recognized was by the cashier at a pizza place.

"It costs a lot of money to get a plane and I feel like commercial for me is just as easy," he said. "I live 15 minutes from the commercial airport in Charlotte. I go TSA Precheck. I keep my head down. It's great. I love it. I like to get treated like a normal person, which I am."

Byron has a chance to bookend this season with victories. He opened it with a win in his second consecutive Daytona 500 and now can close it at Phoenix with a victory that would give him his first NASCAR Cup title.

This is Byron's third straight appearance in the final four, and he finished third the last two years as a finalist.

It would be a remarkable way to end a season that began on such a high with the Daytona victory, then suffered an unavoidable rollercoaster of a year because the No. 24 Chevrolet team can only go down after opening on the top with 34 races remaining.

"You come off of Daytona, it sets it up for the year for you. You're a Daytona champion. That's the Super Bowl," said team owner Rick Hendrick. "But then you've got to run all the races because you want to be a champion. You're going to run through down times. We may be behind as an organization at certain tracks.

"Daytona is special, but I think right after you win Daytona, you realize that, hey, we got to be up in the points, we got to win races, we got to advance. There's a tremendous amount of pressure all year long. William had a fast start. But I don't think after two, three races, you can't live on that. You got to move on."

Chase Briscoe

Born and raised in Indiana, Briscoe is a dirt track kid who idolized Tony Stewart, a fellow Hoosier and NASCAR Hall of Famer. He wanted nothing more than to make it to North Carolina and somehow enter a NASCAR race.

He would be content if he made just one start, he didn't even care at what level of the national series Briscoe got his shot. If it came in a development series, so be it, Briscoe still would have made it.

He sure did, and with a team owned by Stewart, no less. But when Stewart-Haas Racing closed at the end of last season, he needed a new job. Joe Gibbs Racing grabbed him and, in the best equipment of his career, he's raced his way into a shot at his first NASCAR championship.

Back in Mitchell, Indiana, the high school gymnasium will be open Sunday night to root on their local hero.

"The Lawrence County Tourism Board rented an LED TV. I don't know how many people are going to show up — might be a hundred people, might be 1,500, I don't know," Briscoe said. "Obviously the whole city has gotten behind me and this run. They lined the entire Main Street up with checkered flags, running a 19 flag at City Hall.

"So yeah, it's pretty cool how into it my city is, there's only like 3,000 people there in the first place. All 3,000 are pretty excited about it."

Briscoe scored the first Cup win of his career at Phoenix when he still drove for SHR. In his one visit to Phoenix with JGR this spring, he crashed and finished 35th.

Denny Hamlin

Hamlin is the sentimental favorite and recognized as the greatest NASCAR driver to never win a championship.

He was the first driver to qualify for the finale by winning at Las Vegas, a victory that marked the 60th of his career and tied him for 10th on the all-time win list. Hamlin is a three-time Daytona 500 winner and long ago made peace with the idea he may never win a Cup title.

This is his sixth wide-open shot at the title — first time in the finale since 2021 — and he let the first five chances slip away through a comedy of errors.

Hamlin is not the most likeable driver among fans, but his tenacity in suing NASCAR along with Michael Jordan over antitrust claims, the candid opinions he offers both on his "Actions Detrimental" podcast and social media, and the recent revelation that his father is dying, has given him strong outside backing.

If there was any doubt, NASCAR listed Hamlin in the top-five in voting for most popular driver.

"Shocking. I don't know that I've ever been in the top 10. So that in itself was quite a shock," Hamlin said. "I'm not really sure what it is. I think it's probably a culmination of all of it. I do think that people can only understand you for what they see on TV.

"Sometimes you rub 'em the wrong way, and sometimes they connect with you. I'm not sure. Certainly it's super unusual to see my name on the list."

*RuPaul's Drag Race *legends Monét X Change and Trinity The Tuck have gone from being mere twinners to sisters in the same family.

The relationship between the *All Stars 4 *champions (and current *All Stars 7* competitors) has strengthened over time, as Monét tells EW's BINGE podcast (below) that mutual experiences both on and off the Emmy-winning show have brought them closer together since the queens each took a crown on *AS4* back in 2019.

"*All Stars 4 *was the first time I ever met Trinity, and Trinity will tell you, Trinity really wanted to win, and when Trinity is in pageant competition mode, she can be a little savage, right?" Monét explains. "It's not like she tried to do something crazy, but there was definitely an air of savagery. After the show, working a little bit together, we got to know each other more, and I got to see Trinity for Trinity. After we both won, we got to work a lot together, and I've seen this really beautiful side of Trinity that I didn't necessarily experience on *All Stars 4 *because she was really trying to win that s---. Since then, I've hung out with Trinity a lot and we've done a lot of stuff together and I've really seen what a beautiful and nice person Trinity is. It's not something for the camera."

She points to Trinity's willingness to help other queens with their looks in the Werk Room — something the queen has done repeatedly since *All Stars 7 *premiered in May — as indicative of the heart that beats underneath the tightest tuck in the industry.

"Even on this *All Stars* season, everything Trinity was doing on and off camera just showed what a genuinely sweet, amazing person Trinity is, and I really have grown to love Trinity immensely since *All Stars 4*," continues the season 10 alum. "She's a very good person, she's very kind, and she's very sweet, and she'll go out of her way, sometimes to her detriment, to help other people."

RuPaul's Drag Race

Trinity The Tuck and Monét X Change bond on 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 7.'. World of Wonder/Paramount+

Monét's words come after the pair had a moving moment on the *Untucked* couch together, expressing love and admiration for each other through tears — all while season 5 winner Jinkx Monsoon hilariously underscored the end of their moment with an expertly timed strum of her ukulele.

She also shared another moment (non-musical, however) with Jinkx on episode 9 of *AS7*, which saw the top-two challenge-winning queens perform in the first-ever spoken word lip-sync-for-your-legacy on the Main Stage. Together, they performed Dixie Carter's iconic "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" monologue from the hit sitcom *Designing Women*, which was widely applauded by viewers, though some took issue with the fact that the queens didn't duke it out over a dance beat.

"I think that it's ridiculous," Monét — who has previously performed the number in clubs prior to the latest *AS7* episode — says when asked about the criticism. "Say hallelujah to the drag legends, people like Lypsinka, who started doing that s---, and Candis Cayne, who really put lip-syncing to spoken word on the map. If people think that it's a boomer thing, then drag is not for you, bitch, go watch something else, go watch hockey, go watch Allen Iverson dribble the ball. I don't know if he plays basketball anymore, but, sure, touchdown. Like, just don't participate in drag if you can't appreciate all kinds of it. It's not for you, Mary."

Straight Pride™ ended when Maddy Morphosis sashayed away from *RuPaul's Drag Race* season 14.

Though many fan-generated memes suggested otherwise, RuPaul's three-time Emmy-winning fashion mastermind Zaldy tells EW the *Drag Race *host's now-iconic patchwork dress from the April 8 "Catwalk" episode was not, in fact, a tribute to Maddy's affectionately derided, country-friend Glamazon Prime creation from episode 6.

"That's purely coincidence. There are two different things: Yes, it's the same kind of [aesthetic] muse, but that look for Ru, we always love a coat of many colors as a reference," Zaldy says on the new episode of EW's BINGE podcast above, adding that the final creation was actually an intricately crafted tapestry of several past looks RuPaul has worn over the years.

RuPaul's Drag Race

RuPaul's season 14 patch dress was not a tribute to Maddy Morphosis, says Zaldy. World of Wonder/VH1 (2)

"We created it because, every now and again, I save so many of the scraps of things we use for Ru outfits because I think they're just so beautiful," Zaldy continues, noting that there are pieces of Ru's favorite dress — the pink and orange leopard number remixed by Shea Couleé on last week's *All Stars 7* episode — spread throughout the design. "That one, if you look closely, does have these sacred pieces of the hand-painted leopard [dress] in that look. That look is very designed. It has gradating diamond patterns that get smaller toward the top. It's very involved. It's not [just] a patchwork thrown together."

Zaldy, who's worked with RuPaul for decades, also revealed that Shea's *All Stars 7* recreation shook him the hardest, with her hand-crafted "gradation of the scale of the spots" giving him "goosebumps" as he watched her re-design RuPaul's favorite look of all time.

As for the rest of the all-winners cast, who were also tasked with re-interpreting famous RuPaul looks, Zaldy commended them for not simply remixing the clothes, but tailoring them to fit their personal aesthetics.

"If I'm going for who was the most glamorous vision, it was definitely Jaida [Essence Hall]," he observes. "When she came out with that little, tiny mini fur and tied it back to a Diana Ross hairstyle, it was just an incredible, visually stunning look. So was Trinity [The Tuck's], this outrageous head-to-toe look. Everybody really had a moment. I was really impressed with their thought process and their interpretation. Everybody did something I was really touched by."

Though he steers the ship when it comes to RuPaul's closet, he clarifies with a laugh that he isn't the one who put RuPaul in flip-flops and a tracksuit for the Fairytale Justice challenge several episodes ago.

"Ru likes to play, too," he says. "Ru loves fashion, and Ru plays. She loves it. That's 100 percent Ru.... I don't put anybody in flip-flops!"

Fees pushed you over the edge? 5 steps to break up with your bank (James Worrell via Getty Images)

Feeling fed up with your bank? You're not alone. Americans paid nearly $5 billion in overdraft fees alone in 2024, ATM fees just hit a 27-year high and 41% of people hit with surprise fees are closing their accounts. Ready to join them?

Breaking up with your bank isn't as easy as cutting up your debit card and walking away, however. Switching direct deposits, subscriptions and bills on auto-pay to a new account can be tricky. Even one missed payment can lead to overdraft or late fees — and even ding your credit.

Fortunately, by carefully following a few key steps, you can ditch your old bank and start fresh with one that offers higher rates, stronger protections and everything else you're looking for.

1. Hunt down a better bank (and account)

You wouldn't move out of your home without having a new place to go. By the same token, you might not want to open up an account at a new bank before thinking about leaving your old one.

This is your chance to upgrade, so don't settle for more of the same. Here's what to look for when shopping around:

Annual percentage yields. To maximize your money, consider digital banks and accounts offering high rates that outpace inflation with regular compounding.

Fees and balance requirements. Look for accounts with no monthly maintenance fees, low overdraft charges and no minimum balance traps.

Easy access. Make sure your new bank is supported by a strong network of ATMs and branches (if you need them) in your area, and the customer support you want.

Digital tools. A user-friendly mobile app with mobile deposit, bill pay and real-time alerts can make it easier to manage your money on your schedule.

Robust perks. Without the overhead of brick-and-mortar banks, online banks can offer higher rates and useful signup bonuses, while credit unions may provide more personalized service.

Remember what frustrated you with your old bank, and prioritize those fixes for your next one.

2. Map out your payments and deposits

A smooth transition to your new bank begins with understanding which transactions are connected to your current accounts. Review your bank statements from the last two or three months and list out:

Direct deposits — including paychecks, government benefits or side-hustle or gig income

Recurring autopays — utility bills, housing expenses, insurance premiums, credit card bills, streaming services and gym memberships

Random charges — annual subscriptions, quarterly dues or irregular bills that could be easy to forget

This "money map" helps you avoid leaving anything behind at your old bank. It's easy to remember monthly bills, but it's those once-a-year surprises — software renewal, insurance premiums — that could trip you up.

3. Move your money over

With your list in hand, it's time to connect all those payments and deposits to your new bank:

First up: Your paycheck. Ask your employer or benefits provider to send your direct deposit to your new account, and make sure it actually shows up there.

Next: Switch your autopays. Gradually move over bills, subscriptions and other recurring charges to your new debit card or account number. Prioritize your rent or mortgage, power and water bills and other basics, and then tackle streaming services and smaller subscriptions.

Finally: Leave yourself a buffer. Keep enough cash in your old account to cover payments you might've missed. Run both accounts side by side for at least one full billing cycle to ensure nothing slips through the cracks.

Think of this step as overlapping leases when moving apartments: You want both sets of keys until you're confident everything is in the right place.

4. Watch for gotchas and forgotten bills

No matter how careful you are, mistakes can happen. Here are four sneaky fees that could pop up — and how to spot them before they strike:

Overdraft charges. Even with a buffer, one overlooked autopay can drain your old account dry. Many banks still charge $30 to $35 per overdraft — and they can hit you with several in one day.

Minimum balance fees. Many traditional accounts waive monthly charges if you can maintain a certain balance. Know what that threshold is, and keep your balance above it until you close it out.

Outstanding checks. Wait until any paper checks you've written have cleared. A check that bounces after you close an account can be a major headache.

Early closure penalties. Some banks charge fees if you close an account within the first 90 to 180 days. Check your bank's policy before pulling the plug.

5. Cut ties with your old accounts

Once you're confident everything's flowing through your new account,it's time to make the breakup official. You'll want to handle this carefully to avoid any messy surprises:

Call your old bank. Call or visit your local branch and request to have your accounts closed. It's helpful to also put it in writing, listing out each account number and your new bank and account for remaining balances.

Get it in writing. Ask for written proof that your old accounts are closed with a $0 balance. Save these documents for your records and tax returns.

Toss your old cards and checks. Cut up your old debit cards and shred any unused checks. Scissors work fine too, just be sure to cut through sensitive info, including card chips or strips.

Watch for leftover charges. Monitor your new account and credit reports for the next few months to catch any stray charges that can bounce back to haunt you.

Bottom line: Moving on doesn't have to cost you

As with any relationship, breaking up with your bank can feel intimidating. But this one doesn't have to hurt.

Open your new account, map out how your money flows, move things over in stages, stay alert for surprise fees and close out everything with proof it's complete.

Do it right, and you'll come out ahead with stronger rates, lower fees, better apps, more useful digital tools and banking that best fits your goals.

Medicare, the nation's government-sponsored health insurance program for seniors, comes with many free perks. These frequently overlooked senior benefits can help seniors stay on top of their health without requiring them to pay for services out of pocket.

Here are some key Medicare benefits you can use once you become eligible for the program.

Find Out: 14 benefits seniors are entitled to but often forget to claim

1. Schedule a 'welcome to Medicare' preventative visit

Medicare Part B covers preventive care such as medical screenings. It includes a free one-time Medicare welcome visit for those who enroll in the program.

At any point in the first 12 months after you sign up, you can schedule a welcome visit with your primary care physician to review your medical concerns, family history, and future care.

Your physician will also take vital statistics such as your weight, height, and blood pressure to establish a medical baseline. They'll administer a basic vision test, give you information about other preventative Medicare services, and help you craft a health care plan to help you enjoy a healthy retirement.

Who really has the cheapest auto insurance in your area? Check your zip code here.

2. Take advantage of annual Medicare wellness visits

After your one-time welcome visit, you'll be eligible for annual wellness visits where you and your doctor can collaborate on a personalized medical care plan.

You'll be able to schedule recommended screenings, update your medical history, talk through any concerns, and get a cognitive assessment.

The free Medicare wellness visit differs from the yearly physical exam you might have gotten with previous health insurance plans. This Medicare-specific benefit is intended to help you develop a personalized care plan and to assess any health risks you might face.

3. Sign up for Medicare Part D drug coverage

Medicare Part D covers prescription medications and can help minimize the costs of both generic and brand-name drugs.

Even if you don't currently take any prescription medications, it's still smart to sign up for Medicare Part D at the same time as you sign up for Medicare Parts A and B. There's a lifelong penalty fee for signing up late.

You're likely to be prescribed medications as you age, even if you're not taking any now. Take steps now so you can afford medications later.

Do you have equity in your home? Compare home equity options to potentially pay off debt, fund renovations, and more.

4. Enroll in free alcohol screening and counseling

Once a year, Medicare will cover a free alcohol misuse screening for enrollees. These screenings help you and your medical professional determine whether you have developed a dependency on alcohol that requires attention.

If you struggle with your drinking but don't technically qualify for an alcohol dependency diagnosis, Medicare will pay for four in-person alcohol counseling sessions. These sessions take place in a primary care setting rather than an inpatient treatment facility or outpatient counseling service.

5. Try free smoking cessation counseling

Do you currently smoke but want to quit? As a Medicare enrollee, you qualify for eight free counseling sessions over a span of 12 months.

These sessions are meant to help you end any tobacco use, including smoking. To be eligible for this screening, a doctor must recommend it.

6. Get free vaccines

Medicare now covers preventative vaccines for those who are signed up for Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage drug coverage.

With no copay or out-of-pocket costs, you can get all annual and one-time vaccines such as those for RSV, shingles, and the seasonal flu and keep more cash in your wallet.

Make Money: 8 things to do if you're barely scraping by financially

7. Schedule any of four colorectal screenings

Those enrolled in Medicare are eligible for four types of free colorectal screenings:

Fecal occult blood test

Flexible sigmoidoscopy

Stool DNA test

Colonoscopy

To be eligible for the free screenings, you must schedule them at the intervals established under Medicare rules.

8. Set up a medical savings account (MSA) plan

A Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) is a form of Medicare Advantage plan that is similar to a health savings account (HSA).

MSAs let you save money to use specifically for health care costs. As with an HSA, you must have a high-deductible health plan to qualify for an MSA.

Bottom line

Understanding how Medicare works is a crucial part of your retirement readiness. Planning ahead of time to take advantage of every benefit Medicare offers is a great way to protect both your savings and your health in retirement.

Your specific Medicare plan may come with other free perks not discussed here, especially if you sign up for Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage. Before committing to a plan, read through its list of benefits so you can find the one that's right for you.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. grocers and food companies ranging from Walmart (WMT) to Smithfield Foods (SFD) are bracing for a dip in November sales if federal food aid benefits lapse for the first time due to the ongoing government shutdown.

The shutdown has imperiled next month's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, which serves nearly 42 million people.

Neither Congress nor the U.S. Department of Agriculture has acted to fund the benefits beyond Saturday.

The gap could mean an $8 billion revenue drop for grocers, declining sales for their suppliers and reduced hours for workers as it drives SNAP recipients to reduce spending, trade groups, companies and a union said this week.

"It's not only poor people who are on SNAP who are going to be affected. It means the places where they spend the money aren't going to get that money," said Marion Nestle, a professor emerita of health, nutrition and food studies at New York University.

The National Grocers Association said on Wednesday that Congress should reopen the government and fund SNAP to avoid instability for customers and retailers, warning of "serious consequences for local grocers, their employees, and the food supply chain."

"Retailers are going to be in a terrible situation here trying to manage costs and inventory," said Rob Karr, president and CEO of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, adding stores could see unsold perishable goods go to waste.

A USDA spokesperson called the benefit lapse "an inflection point for Senate Democrats." The agency has repeatedly blamed Democrats for the shutdown, most of whom have withheld votes on a spending bill in an attempt to keep healthcare costs from spiking for many Americans.

Nearly 267,000 retailers are authorized to accept SNAP and they collect $96 billion each year, or $8 billion a month, in benefits, according to USDA data.

About 75% of all SNAP benefits are used at supermarkets and superstores, rather than smaller retailers like bodegas, the data shows.

Walmart, the biggest U.S. retailer, takes the biggest share of the funds, capturing about 26.1% of all of the grocery spend from the program, according to research firm Numerator.

The big-box store, along with smaller rivals like Dollar General and Dollar Tree, could see its sales in the fourth quarter fall by less than 1% compared to last year if the payments do not go through, and depending how long the shutdown continues to last, according to a note sent Tuesday by research firm Bernstein.

Walmart declined to comment. Dollar General and Dollar Tree did not respond to requests for comment.

Retailers are also navigating other policy issues, like the USDA's September proposal to change stocking requirements for stores that accept SNAP, and cuts to the food aid program from Trump's July tax-cut and spending bill, said Alex Baloga, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association.

The impact of lapsed benefits on grocery prices is hard to predict, but some retailers could respond to a drop in sales by raising prices in an attempt to protect thin margins, said David Ortega, professor of food economics at Michigan State University.

"Especially if you're looking at a small-size grocery store in a low income area, this is quite concerning for them," Ortega said.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union, which represents grocery retail and food manufacturing workers, said in a statement that their members "could see a reduction in hours and wages if SNAP dollars aren't available to be spent in their stores or on their products."

Packaged food companies like Kraft Heinz, J M Smucker, General Mills and Tyson Foods, which supply grocery stores, could also take a sales hit in November of a couple of percentage points, the Bernstein note said.

The companies did not respond to requests for comment.

Smithfield Foods, the largest U.S. pork processor, said on Tuesday that it factored in potential impacts of delayed SNAP benefits as it raised its fiscal year 2025 operating profit outlook for other reasons.

Across the U.S. food industry, about 7.5% of dollars are tied to SNAP usage in categories in which Smithfield sells products, though suspended benefits would have a relatively minor impact on the company, executives said. The company also said it was working with retailers to promote affordable products.

"Obviously, it's something that we're focused on, something we're paying a lot of attention to because it does affect 40 million households in the U.S.," CEO Shane Smith said in an interview.

Kraft Heinz has tried to lower its exposure to the SNAP program in part to reduce volatility from potential cuts. It saw sales falter in 2023 after the end of expanded SNAP benefits tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CEO Carlos Abrams-Rivera said in June that the maker of Heinz baked beans and Kraft macaroni-and-cheese reduced its exposure to purchases made with SNAP from 20% three years ago to 13% in June.

Kraft Heinz declined to comment.

Robert Englund gets his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

He's way beyond Elm Street now.

Robert Englund, the actor known for chillingly portraying the razor-gloved bad guy Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, found a new home Friday when he was inducted onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He accepted the 2,826th star from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

The crowd chanted "Freddy!" as Englund took the mic at the perfectly timed ceremony. He thanked those who'd helped him over his 50-year career, which has also included appearances on TV's Stranger Things and The Goldbergs, as well as movies such as Urban Legend.

Appropriately for Halloween, Englund ended his acceptance speech with a hearty "Trick or f‑‑‑ing treat!"

Heather Langenkamp, who played protagonist Nancy Thompson in several of the Elm Street movies, was one of the speakers. And she lauded the classically trained actor's professionalism.

She said Englund was "always rehearsing until they rolled the camera. He would work on his right shoulder dipping a little lower than his left. The glove, always ready to slash you at a given moment."

The first time she saw Englund in costume as the villainous Freddy was "terrifying," Langenkamp recalled. "The take goes along and Robert Englund raises his glove, and he says, 'This is God.' It was blasphemous. It was hideous. It was so evil. It sent chills up every spine in that back alley, and, for the first time, I realized, 'holy s‑‑‑, I'm in a slasher movie.'"

The actress said Englund has made left a mark on his genre that even a century from now, audiences will be familiar with his work.

She also quoted one of Freddy's signature lines: "Welcome to prime time, bitches!"

Along with Langenkamp, director Eli Roth, who worked with Englund on the 2005 horror comedy 2001 Maniacs, took the mic and noted that spending All Hallow's Eve with Englund was perfect.

He lauded the actor as "a man who truly understands how to find the humanity, even in a monster."

Roth said Freddy is the character kids always name when you ask them to think of horror icons.

"Freddy is always first!" he insisted. "Always. That is no accident. Freddy Krueger was the first time a killer in a slasher movie spoke. Up until then, slashers were silent assassins or a breather. Avatars for the unstoppable force of death. But Robert made death fun! Just so f‑‑‑ing fun."

Rain Phoenix is reflecting on how her brother's death forever shaped her view of life — and her relationship with mortality.

In an emotional new essay published on Another Jane Pratt Thing on Friday, October 31, the 52-year-old actress shared that losing River Phoenix at just 23 years old led her to what she calls a "vibrant relationship with death." The actor died of an accidental drug overdose outside The Viper Room in 1993, a tragedy that Rain says she initially coped with by "shutting it out."

"But that somehow kept him from me," she wrote, per Page Six, marking the 32nd anniversary of her brother's passing. "Now 32 years and many losses later, a deepening curiosity about death, grief and how we as a society process it, has come alive for me."

That curiosity inspired Rain to study the "death-positive movement," a growing cultural shift that encourages people to speak openly about death and dying. During the pandemic, she even trained to become a "death doula," a person who supports others emotionally and spiritually through the dying process. "My anxiety led me to take an online course on how to become a death doula and write a million songs," she explained.

River, who rose to fame in the 1980s with roles in Stand by Me, The Mosquito Coast, and Running on Empty, remains one of Hollywood's most celebrated talents gone too soon. His younger brother, actor Joaquin Phoenix, has also reflected on River's lasting impact, recently describing him on This Past Weekend as "the guiding light in some ways" of their family.

"My brother was quite a force… Maybe it's because he was the first son and he was incredible," Joaquin, 51, said of his brother. "He was kind of like the guiding light in some ways. He was the one who acted first. We used to sing on the streets and he played guitar and kind of like oversaw everybody." Joaquin was just 19 years old when River died.
