On today's episode, Variety's Haley Kluge and Jennifer Dorn discuss how they produce Variety's amazing Power of Women visuals year after year. And Marc Malkin brings us updates on Season 2 of "The Pitt" from stars Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa.
Kluge, who is Variety's creative director, and visual director Jennifer Dorn enjoy the challenge of putting the puzzle pieces together for five cover images that are meant to work as standalone images and as a panoramic single image.

"The biggest difference for Power of Women versus a traditional standalone cover is you are looking at them in a holistic sense. How are these five working together," Kluge says. "So when I start to look at what do these covers look like from a design perspective, I inherit really wonderful photography that Jennifer produces, and then my version becomes, how are these posters? How are these pieces of art in certain respects? And in this case, we really leaned into the architectural pieces of the hotel. It's a really strong typography typeface that we're using Gradient Gothic that really leans into the architecture, because the photography and the wardrobe is so feminine and soft and beautiful."
Dorn, who has spearheaded all photography for Variety since 2018, notes that an elaborate photo shoot is a big ask of people who are already faced with being photographed all the time for their work or because of their celebrity.
"There's a lot of trust. They come, they have their photo taken and then they leave and then they probably cross their fingers that we're going to do right by them. I take that seriously and I know Haley does too. So it's nice to see it all come together," Dorn says.
Malkin chatted with Wyle and LaNasa at a charity event in Los Angeles on Oct. 28. The Emmy-winning "Pitt" stars are now knee-deep in the filming of Season 2 of the HBO Max sleeper hit. Malkin pried a few gory details out about the storylines out of LaNasa. With a gallow's humor wink, LaNasa described the work demanded of the medical professionals portrayed on the hospital-set series as being "thoroughly disgusting. Thoroughly, thoroughly disgusting. Disturbing, heartbreaking. This is what we do every day at 'The Pitt.' "
