"So, Ser Duncan the Tall, how good a knight are you?"

The humble hedge knight, played by Peter Claffey, is going to have to answer that question rather quickly. The final *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* trailer, which dropped today, signals violence and bloodshed are coming his way.

The next *Game of Thrones* spinoff takes us almost a century before the events of the original TV series to the small town of Ashford Meadow in the middle of the Reach in Westeros. It's there that Dunk "the lunk" (as he's nicknamed), who squired for a now-deceased hedge knight, attempts to earn some coin by entering a tourney as a knight himself.

The latest preview gives viewers a solid rundown of all the figures he'll encounter in this important moment in the fantasy world's history.

There's Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), a young bald-headed boy that Dunk meets on his way to the tourney who's determined to squire for the warm-hearted giant. There's also Prince Aerion "Brightflame" Targaryen (Finn Bennett), a royal who wants Dunk's head for reasons that will become apparent on the show; hence, why Prince Baelor (Bertie Carvel), Aerion's uncle and heir to the Iron Throne, asks the poor soul about his knightly prowess.

The timeline for *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* is well past the setting of *House of the Dragon*, the events of which are still playing out on HBO but will inevitably contribute greatly to the extinction of dragon-kind. It explains the mentality the small folk have around Targaryens now. They are "incestuous" and "tyrants," Dunk is warned.

The trailer also previews the real dilemma Dunk finds himself in the middle of: The footage shows chaotic scenes in which multiple jousting knights clash on horseback. It looks like a war scene. Readers of George R. R. Martin's *Tales of Dunk and Egg* novellas will recognize this as the Trial of Seven, another element that will be explained in due course on the series.

Martin co-created and executive-produced the new drama with showrunner Ira Parker, a former scribe on *House of the Dragon*. Season 1 will adapt the events of Martin's first novella in the Dunk and Egg collection, titled "The Hedge Knight," when *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* premieres the first of six half-hour episodes on Jan. 18 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Season 2 is already in the works to tackle the second novella, "The Sworn Sword," and will be released in 2027.
