She wrote that she is "so incredibly proud of myself and my body for everything it has endured" over the last two years

Erbert celebrated her pregnancy, which she and Hough announced in July, and called it a "miracle" given all her body has endured

Hayley Erbert is grateful to be alive.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, the dancer, 31, marked the two-year anniversary of her health scare with an Instagram post as she reflected on how life has changed since she was rushed to the hospital in December 2023. At the time, she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma and underwent an emergency craniectomy.

"Two years ago today, I was given a second chance at life through life-saving brain surgery," she wrote in the caption. "In these two years, I've gone through every human emotion imaginable, the kind that cracks you open and the kind that puts you back together."

Erbert — who married Derek Hough in August 2023, just months before the health scare, and revealed in July that she's pregnant with their first child — said that she's "reclaimed parts of myself I thought I'd never find again, rediscovered who I am, and moved through seasons of loss, triumph, joy, endless fear, grief, healing, and quiet hope" since she underwent brain surgery two years ago.

"It was a whirlwind to say the least.. But I'm truly grateful for it all, and so incredibly proud of myself and my body for everything it has endured," she continued, before offering a particularly poignant reflection on her pregnancy given where she was two years ago. "What a miracle it is that two years ago I was fighting for my life… and now, here I am creating life. 🤍"

Hough, 40, and Erbert were in the middle of their Symphony of Dance tour when she was rushed to the hospital. She returned to the stage four months later. At the time, she told PEOPLE that she was "so excited to get back out and dance again after having something so traumatic happen."

Later that year, she returned to the Dancing with the Stars ballroom, too, for another emotional performance, before which Hough recalled being told his wife "might not make it" by doctors as she was rushed into surgery.

On the first anniversary of the surgery, Erbert and Hough returned to the Washington, D.C. stage where it all happened for a tour performance. They had Erbert's doctor, Dr. Mai, join them onstage too to recognize his efforts.

"Tonight, we changed the story of that room. We transformed it, from fear to beauty, from uncertainty to faith, and from despair to triumph," Hough wrote in an Instagram post.

He added, "Having Dr. Mai, the man who saved her life, standing on that stage with us made it all the more powerful. We got to share a moment on stage thanking him for the gift of more time, more memories, and more love."

The couple are working on a documentary about Erbert's recovery, which Hough previously told PEOPLE is a "beautiful" culmination to her story. "I just watched some things back from it, and I'm like, just seeing her hair and where she's come. It's amazing," he said. "We can't wait to share it with everybody. It's really special."
