Apollo 13 (1995)

The United States' fifth trip to the moon was expected to feature NASA's third walk on the lunar surface. But when an explosion onboard the service module compromised the Apollo 13 mission and the safety of the astronauts, NASA's priority shifted to getting their people home safely.

Ron Howard's dramatization of the 1970 space emergency was a hit among critics and viewers when it was released in 1995, earning nine Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Picture. This interpretation of the events pledges fealty to the source material, sometimes at the expense of character development, but the film's all-star cast is more than equipped to pick up the slack. *—Ilana Gordon *

Bourne Identity (2002)

Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in 'The Bourne Identity'

Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in 'The Bourne Identity'.

Universal/Everett Collection

The first of five films in the Jason Bourne franchise, this action film serves as the origin story for the man who goes from government agent to government target. After an unidentified male is fished out of the water with two gunshots in his back and a total lack of memory or identity, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) goes on a mission to find out who he is, where he came from, and why so many shadowy operatives are hunting him. A spycraft thriller that doesn't skimp on chase scenes or fight sequences, *The Bourne Identity* might not be the best the franchise has to offer, but it possesses a magic all its own. *—I.G.*

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

Mike Nichols put a bow on his illustrious directing career in 2007 with *Charlie Wilson's War*, a biographical comedy about Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks). A legislator more known for his partying than his policy, Wilson makes it his mission to covertly organize artillery support for Afghan rebels fighting the Soviet Union.

Aaron Sorkin wrote the script, which is set in 1980 during the Soviet-Afghan War, and Nichols packs his project with A-list talent, including Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hanks takes a detour from his traditional nice guy roles to sleaze it up as the hard-drinking, sweet-talking Wilson, and that alone is worth a watch. *—I.G.*

Dazed and Confused (1993)

During the summer of 1992, Richard Linklater gathered all the up-and-coming talent in young Hollywood and shipped them off to Texas to make a film about the last day of the 1976 school year. *Dazed and Confused** *is the vehicle that launched Matthew McConaughey's career, but truthfully, his performance would have been lost without the movie's strong, mostly undiscovered ensemble.

Linklater used *Dazed and Confused *to continue developing his signature style — as seen in his first feature, *Slacker* (1990) — for making naturalistic movies crammed with contemporary dialogue, some of which was improvised by his cast. The film flopped upon release, but Linklater's ability to capture the nostalgia and hopefulness of this particular life period earned *Dazed and Confused* the third slot on EW's list of the 50 best high school movies. *—I.G.*

The life lessons of Steven Spielberg's tender sci-fi masterpiece remain as potent as they were in 1982. After young Elliott (Henry Thomas), a child of divorce, meets with an alien left behind on Earth by his species, a unique friendship is formed as Elliott tries desperately to protect him and help reconnect him with his home planet. Emphasizing the value of tolerance, *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial *also evokes childlike wonder in adults through John Williams' arresting score and Spielberg's expert direction, making for the perfect family viewing. *—Kevin Jacobsen*

Ron Koeberer/TWC

*Fruitvale Station*, Ryan Coogler's feature directorial debut, also represents the beginning of his creative partnership with Michael B. Jordan. The duo's onscreen legacy — which includes the *Creed* and *Black Panther *franchises, and 2025's *Sinners* — begins on Dec. 31, 2008, in an Oakland train station. Jordan plays Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old father who was killed by BART Police on New Year's Day 2009, after defending himself in a fight on a train; the film chronicles the last day of his life.

Grant's real-life death was one of the many instances of police brutality that precipitated the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the film premiered the same year BLM was founded. Coogler's work helped further the cause, with EW's review stating, "He puts us in touch with the full, wrenching humanity." *—I.G.***** Where to watch *Fruitvale Station*: Starz

Gladiator (2000)

The 1960s were known for "sword-and-sandal movies" — splashy epics like *Ben-Hur *and *Spartacus* that centered Roman Republic heroics against backdrops of sand dunes and ancient architecture. In 2000, Ridley Scott revived the genre, casting Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix as opposing forces in a battle for Roman political control.

Crowe plays Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, a family man with a fierce aptitude on the battlefield. When Commodus (Phoenix) learns his father, the emperor, plans to make Maximus his successor, Commodus has his father and Maximus' family killed. Maximus' quest to avenge his loved ones takes him on a journey from soldier to being enslaved, forced to do battle in the arena in the hopes of securing his freedom and justice for his family. *—I.G.*

Hot Fuzz (2007)

Nick Frost as Danny Butterman and Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel in 'Hot Fuzz'

The buddy cop genre goes British in *Hot Fuzz*, a film about Sgt. Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) who is transferred to a different district for being too good at his job. Instead of kicking down doors and catching bad guys, Sergeant Angel finds himself in the charming village of Sandford, where the crime rate is nonexistent — but, somehow, the villagers keep winding up dead.

Directed by Edgar Wright — who previously collaborated with Pegg on the zombie hit *Shaun of the Dead* — *Hot Fuzz* is for people who like *Lethal Weapon* and *Bad Boys*, but wish those films offered more of a cottage core aesthetic. EW's critic notes Wright and Pegg's "sharp instincts for the hilarity of cultural differences. They just love mucking around in the pond of temperamental differences that separates the U.K. and the States." *—I.G. *

Loving (2016)

*Loving* is a historical drama about the 1967 Supreme Court decision that invalidated state laws that prohibited interracial marriage. But, it's also a romance about the marriage at the center of that case. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton star as Mildred and Richard Loving, the Virginia couple who were told they couldn't live in the same state for 25 years, took their case to the Supreme Court, and the rest is history.

"I think it's time to celebrate them and what they achieved," Negga tells EW, "and, you know, it's also just a beautiful love story, the most beautiful love story that's ever been told, to be honest." *—Lia Beck*

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)

Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela in 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom'

Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela in 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom'.

Keith Bernstein

It's impossible for anyone to fully capture Nelson Mandela's impact, and the biggest issue in *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom* is that the film tried. Released only a few months before the activist's death at the age of 95 in December of 2013, *Mandela *is a comprehensive remembering of his story, starting with his political awakening and incarceration, and ending with his rise to power as South Africa's president in a postapartheid world.

Idris Elba doesn't look like Mandela, but he doesn't need to: His towering performance captures the former president's spirit and convictions. Released around the same time as *12 Years a Slave*, *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom *doesn't pack the same emotional punch, but it remains an important biography of a once-in-a-lifetime leader. *—I.G.*

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Duane Jones as Ben in 'Night of the Living Dead'

We have *Night of the Living Dead* to thank for our modern idea of zombies and the many tropes attached to the subgenre. Legendary director George Romero was inspired by the 1954 novel *I Am Legend* for this independent horror classic, which centers the action on a farmhouse overrun by ravenous, undead "ghouls." The film's allusions to then-current events (the Vietnam War) just make it all the more resonant. *—K.J.*

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Tom Holland's third solo Spider-Man movie, *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, ties up some loose ends and touches hearts while doing it. The film's actors and production team were vigilant about keeping spoilers under wraps, and almost five years later, it's still worth protecting some of the movie's most special moments. Suffice it to say that a number of characters return, fans and critics loved the film, and Holland continues to take impeccable care of Peter Parker during his Marvel tour of duty.

EW's critic applauds the ending, writing "what seems at first like pure fan service turns out to be some of the best and by far the most meta stuff Marvel has done, tender and funny and a little bit devastating." *—I.G.*

Waterworld (1995)

Kevin Costner as the Mariner and Dennis Hopper as Deacon in 'Waterworld'

Kevin Costner as the Mariner and Dennis Hopper as Deacon in 'Waterworld'.

Universal/Getty

*Waterworld* cost $200 million to make, required 166 days to shoot, and got a bad rap when it arrived in theaters. Often compared to *Mad Max*, time and global warming have given people reason to reconsider the merits of this postapocalyptic science fiction film. Set in 2500, the movie finds the planet underwater after rising seas and melting ice caps covered the land, driving humans onto floating communities. *Waterworld* is, 30 years after its debut, depressingly prescient.

Kevin Costner stars as the Mariner, a nomad with a boat and a talent for defending himself against the gangs that travel the seas, raiding local communities. When the Mariner rescues a woman named Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and a young girl named Enola (Tina Majorino), he discovers he might have found the key to accessing dry land. *—I.G.*

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Meg Ryan as Sally Albright and Billy Crystal as Harry Burns in 'When Harry Met Sally'

There are many reasons why Nora Ephron movies are considered the gold standard of romantic comedies — and *When Harry Met Sally* is one of those reasons. A classic tale of "will they or won't they?" Rob Reiner's film follows Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as Harry Burns and Sally Albright, recent college grads who first meet on a road trip from Chicago to New York City. As the years pass, the two grow up and settle down separately in the Big Apple, where they continue to run into each other, building a relationship to be envious of.

Ephron's witty screenplay stands solidly on its own, but also benefits from the inclusion of Crystal's riffs and improvisations, including the now infamous line, "I'll have what she's having." *—I.G.*

Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, Abigail Hargrove as Rachel Lane, and Mireille Enos as Karin Lane in 'World War Z'.

Jaap Buitendijk/Paramount Pictures

When you take away a zombie's one weakness — its tendency towards slow-motion movement — you get *World War Z*, a zombie film in which the villains don't so much stagger as swarm. Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a former U.N. Investigator with the skills and connections necessary to save his wife and two young daughters — but only if he agrees to identify the origin of the outbreak, and help humanity survive a planet-wide zombie apocalypse.

EW says the film may be "the most entertaining and accomplished zombie thriller since George A. Romero's *Dawn of the Dead*," and if that's not incentive enough, you get to see Pitt in a role that has him exemplifying "feral grace under pressure." *—I.G.*

**Available to stream: Jan. 1**

Steve McQueen's *12 Years a Slave *is an unflinching portrait of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free man who was kidnapped and forced into slavery for over a decade. The film spares nothing in showing the cruelty he and others, including Lupita Nyong'o's Patsey, endured.

Despite the brutality, McQueen also finds moments of strength and humanity that linger long after the credits. The film went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Before he became a big name in the DC universe, Zack Snyder got his start with 2004's *Dawn of the Dead*, a sleek remake of George A. Romero's zombie classic. The script came from James Gunn (now a *major *figure in DC filmmaking), who loaded the story with intense action and gory thrills.

District 9 (2009)

Jason Cope as Christopher Johnson in 'District 9'

Jason Cope as Christopher Johnson in 'District 9'.

**Available to stream: Jan. 1**

When it came out, *District 9 *was hailed by * *as the "must-see movie of the summer." Made on a relatively light budget of $30 million (that's practically unheard of for a blockbuster these days), the sci-fi flick is set in an alternate 1980s, where an alien spaceship is spotted over Johannesburg, South Africa. Inside, authorities find a colony of sick, starving aliens (dubbed Prawns), and force them into a government-controlled camp known as District 9.

Part of what makes the movie so unique is its faux-documentary approach, mixing fictional interviews, news clips, and surveillance footage to make the story feel strikingly real.

Steven Soderbergh's *Erin Brockovich* tells the true story of a tenacious woman who uncovers a major environmental scandal. Julia Roberts stars as the real-life activist, a single mother who exposes Pacific Gas & Electric for contaminating a small town's water supply and drives a major legal case against the company.

The film received five Academy Award nominations, with Roberts winning Best Actress for what EW's critic called her "most forceful dramatic performance."

Back when A24 was still flying under the radar, *Green Room *exploded onto the scene as a merciless thriller that wastes no time putting viewers on the edge of their seats.

**Available to stream: Jan. 1**

Guillermo del Toro's *Hellboy *isn't your typical superhero movie, packing in plenty of monsters and del Toro's signature love for the grotesque. Ron Perlman stars as the gruff, cigar-chomping titular anti-hero juggling his job as a paranormal agent with a dark destiny that's finally catching up to him.

**Director: **Guillermo del Toro

**Available to stream: Jan. 1**

Denzel Washington always had a way of elevating any movie, and *Man on Fire *is no exception. He plays John Creasy, a bodyguard who lets his actions speak louder than words. Even though the movie got mixed reviews, most people can agree that the standout is the sweet bond Creasy forms with young Dakota Fanning's character.

**Director: **Tony Scott

**Cast:** Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, Giancarlo Giannini, Radha Mitchell, Christopher Walken, Marc Anthony, Mickey Rourke, Rachel Ticotin

**Available to stream: Jan. 1**

*Monty Python's The Meaning of Life *is a hilarious and, at times, disgusting ride through life's biggest questions.* *Returning to the sketch comedy style of the troupe's TV series and debut film, the movie fully embraced their fearless approach to humor — yes, we're talking about the outrageous Mr. Creosote vomiting gag.

This audacious comedy earned critical acclaim, culminating in the group taking home the Grand Prix at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival.

**Director: **Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam

**Cast:** Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Carol Cleveland, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Simon Jones, Judy Loe, Patricia Quinn, Andrew MacLachlan

My Girl (1991)

Macaulay Culkin as Thomas and Anna Chlumsky as Vada in 'My Girl'

Macaulay Culkin as Thomas and Anna Chlumsky as Vada in 'My Girl'.

**Available to stream: Jan. 1**

In *My Girl*, Vada (Anna Chlumsky) is an 11-year-old hypochondriac with a big heart and a morbid curiosity about death — not too surprising, since her widowed dad (played by Dan Aykroyd) runs the local funeral home.

At the center of the movie is Vada's friendship with Thomas J. Sennett (Macaulay Culkin), a young boy who changes her life in ways she never expected. Without giving too much away, the film perfectly hits all the messy, funny, and heartbreaking moments of growing up.

**Director: **Howard Zieff

**Cast:** Anna Chlumsky, Macaulay Culkin, Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Griffin Dunne, Richard Masur, Ann Nelson, Jane Hallaren, Anthony R. Jones, Peter Michael Goetz

A cappella has been around forever, but *Pitch Perfect* catapulted it back into mainstream media in 2012. Between the incredibly fun soundtrack (the Riff Off might be the single greatest musical battle ever) and Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine's hilarious performances, this movie is the perfect excuse to grab your friends, belt out those high notes, and fully embrace your aca-awesome side.

**Director: **Jason Moore

**Cast:** Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Elizabeth Banks, John Michael Higgins, Ester Dean, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee

Priscilla (2023)

Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley in 'Priscilla'

Sabrina Lantos/A24

**Available to stream: Jan. 1**

A year after Baz Luhrmann's *Elvis *biopic launched Austin Butler into superstardom, Sofia Coppola turned the camera to the other side of the King of Rock & Roll's story with *Priscilla*. Based on Priscilla Presley's 1985 memoir *Elvis and Me*, the film explores what life was like for her growing up and falling in love with one of the world's biggest icons.

Cailee Spaeny shines as Priscilla, earning a Golden Globe nomination for her stunning performance. EW praised the actress as "preternatural in her ability to believably move from naive teen to self-possessed woman," adding that she "sells that gradual arc — represented so precisely through Priscilla's physical trappings of hair, fashion, and make-up — with graceful subtlety."

**Director: **Sofia Coppola

**Cast:** Cailee Spaeny, Jacob Elordi, Daniel Beirne, Dagmara Dominczyk, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, Lynne Griffin, Matthew Shaw, Tim-Dowler-Coltman, Dan Abramovici

Chris Hemsworth's Thor is back in a new *Avengers: Doomsday* teaser that features the return of the thunder god's adopted daughter Love, played by the actor's real-life child India Rose Hemsworth.

Bootleg video captured of the teaser inside movie theaters already leaked online, but in the age of AI and deepfakes, this is the first official look confirming its validity.

"Father, all my life I've answered every call, to honor, duty, to war," Thor says. "But now fate has given me something I never sought: a child, a life untouched by the storm. Lend me the strength of the All Fathers so that I may fight once more, defeat one more enemy, and return home to her — and not as a warrior but as warmth, to teach her not battle but stillness, the kind I never knew."

He concludes, "Please, father. Hear my words."

This Thor clip is the second of multiple *Avengers: Doomsday* teasers that will screen in cinemas before showings of Disney's *Avatar: Fire and Ash*.

The first confirmed the return of another Hollywood Chris (Evans) as Steve Rogers, despite all of the actor's past comments to the contrary. Another teaser will allegedly feature some of the original X-Men actors, including James Marsden as Cyclops, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Ian McKellen as Magneto.

India Rose Hemsworth made her debut as Love in 2022's *Thor: Love and Thunder*. The character is the biological daughter of Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher, who died and was later resurrected. Before his own death on screen, Gorr left Love in the care of Thor.

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo who delivered Marvel's most lucrative installments, are back at the helm of *Avengers: Doomsday*, which also sees the comeback of Robert Downey Jr. as the comic book baddie Victor Von Doom, a.k.a. Doctor Doom.

The confirmed roster includes Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm) of *The Fantastic Four*; as well as Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Wyatt Russell (John Walker), Lewis Pullman (Bob), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov), and Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr) of *Thunderbolts**/*The New Avengers*.

Tom Hiddleston is drumming up buzz for *Avengers: Doomsday* as his onscreen brother features in the film's latest teaser.

The star behind Loki spoke about the big Marvel event movie to the U.K. edition of *GQ*, calling it "monumental."

"The center of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it," he told the magazine. "It just has never been done before."

The last time we saw Hiddleston's Loki was in season 2 of his namesake Disney+ show, which concluded in November 2023 and hasn't been renewed to date. The actor spoke of where we left off with the character.

"In order to become someone different, whose story had a different ending, he had to make peace with the things he did," Hiddleston told *GQ*. "It gave him the power of authorship over his own story."

The interview arrives as Chris Hemsworth, who plays Loki's brother Thor in the MCU, headlines the second *Avengers: Doomsday* teaser — one of multiple previews first screening in theaters in front of *Avatar: Fire and Ash* before making their way online.

The footage depicts Hemsworth's thunder god reciting an ominous prayer before the battle begins. It involves the return of the actor's real-life daughter, India Rose, as Thor's adopted child Love, first seen in 2022's *Thor: Love and Thunder*.

"Father, all my life I've answered every call, to honor, duty, to war," Thor said in the footage. "But now fate has given me something I never sought: a child, a life untouched by the storm. We haven't seen Loki and Thor together on screen in a hot minute, but the two are confirmed for appearances in *Avengers: Doomsday* alongside a heaping pile of Marvel actors past and present. To name them all is a herculean effort in itself, but the short version is that primary stars from *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*, *Thunderbolts**/*The New Avengers*, *Captain America: Brave New World*, *Black Panther: Wakanda Forever*, *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, and the past era of *X-Men* movies are assembling — plus Channing Tatum as Gambit.

Robert Downey Jr., who retired the role of Iron Man with *Avengers: Endgame*, returns to the MCU as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom, the new Thanos-level threat.

*Avengers: Doomsday* will open in theaters Dec. 18, 2026. The story will then continue in *Avengers: Secret Wars*, which hits Dec. 17, 2027.**
