George Clooney is finally making his Super Bowl commercial debut — and for the actor, the timing and collaborators made all the difference.

Clooney stars in Grubhub's first-ever Big Game commercial, airing during Super Bowl 2026, marking his first appearance in a national Super Bowl ad. The 30-second spot is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Poor Things, and leans fully into the director's signature off-kilter style.

"When I heard Yorgos Lanthimos was directing his first Super Bowl spot for Grubhub, and they called and asked me to be a part of it, I was thrilled," the Jay Kelly star, 64, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview. "He's one of my favorite directors."

The commercial unfolds inside an extravagant castle, where an elegantly dressed group of guests gathers for a lavish dinner party stacked with takeout dishes. As the evening builds with theatrical intensity, the mood shifts when the final course arrives: the fees.

Clooney's character steps in to interrupt the moment, delivering the campaign's central promise: "Grubhub will eat the fees," both delivery and service fees on restaurant orders over $50.

According to a press release, the new benefit is designed as a long-term shift rather than a limited promotion. The company says the move targets one of the biggest pain points for delivery customers, noting that fees on $50-plus orders can average around $13 across delivery apps.

For Clooney, the message resonated immediately. "It's a great way to tell people that they agree the fees are annoying," he says simply. Despite working in a commercial format for the first time with Lanthimos, Clooney says the experience felt no different from stepping onto one of the director's film sets.

"Honestly, nothing changed," he reveals. "He treats a 30-second spot the same way he treats a film. We're in this incredible castle with these terrific actors. He uses his same cameraman that he shoots every film with. He has a very clear point of view, and that carried all the way through."

Clooney describes the finished product as "a very short, two-minute Yorgos Lanthimos film," compressed into a Super Bowl-ready spectacle.

The spot will air during the third quarter of Super Bowl 2026 on Sunday, Feb. 8, and kicks off a broader Grubhub campaign that includes out-of-home advertising, digital activations and limited-time restaurant deals rolling out throughout Big Game week and beyond, according to the company.

Grubhub CEO Howard Migdal said in a statement that the campaign reflects a fundamental rethink of delivery pricing. "For too long, ordering delivery has come with sticker shock," Migdal noted, adding that the company aims to put "hundreds of millions of dollars back into customers' pockets."

As for what Clooney hopes viewers remember once the confetti falls, his answer is as understated as the punchline of the ad itself: "A meal delivered."
