Goldie Hawn is remembering her longtime friend Diane Keaton.
While speaking at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment Gala on Dec. 3, the 80-year-old actress tearfully paid tribute to her late First Wives Club costar, who died of pneumonia on Oct. 11.
Noting that she and Keaton formed a special bond while living in the same building, Hawn recounted the moment she learned of the Annie Hall star's death.
"I happened to learn when I was in my backyard, and I went over to my backyard to my rose garden," Hawn said onstage. "I just looked down. She can't be gone. She just cannot be gone. No one like that should ever die. She just brought so much joy, so much life, so much exuberance. She was like lightning in a bottle."

"She was just an extraordinary human being," she continued through tears. "She's an amazing actress. Look what she can do. Look at this natural aspect of how her body and mind work together and how she's able to bring us joy and give us emotion and all of it. But look what else she did. She wrote books. She was interested in many things, not just acting and producing, but also directing."
The Overboard actress went on to express how impossible it is to encapsulate Keaton's essence in a single Instagram post or speech. "It's like trying to explain what a taste of a tangerine tastes like," she noted.
Hawn also reminisced on the time she and Keaton spent working together while filming The First Wives Club in 1996.
"When we did this movie, we worked together, she was very tenacious," she emphasized, adding that Keaton's signature style was just as memorable as her radiant personality. "She's an incredibly hard worker. At the same time, she would come into the makeup trailer, which is my favorite thing, and she had a different hat on every day."

While she couldn't quite put all of her emotions into words at the time, Hawn also penned an emotional tribute to Keaton just hours after her death.
"Diane, we aren't ready to lose you," Hawn began on Instagram. "You've left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination."
"How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can't tell me to 'shut up' honey," she continued. "We agreed to grow old together, and one day, maybe live together with all our girlfriends. Well, we never got to live together, but we did grow older together. Who knows… maybe in the next life. Shine your fairy dust up there, girlfriend. I'm going to miss the hell out of you."
