Odessa A'zion is dropping out of a film project just two days after her involvement was announced, citing a whitewashing controversy that took over social media.
The "Marty Supreme" star, 25, took to her Instagram stories on Jan. 28 to reveal she will no longer star in a movie adaptation of the Holly Brickley novel "Deep Cuts," which is in the works at A24. She was set to play a character, Zoe Gutierrez, who is described as being Jewish and having Mexican heritage in the book. Fans argued a Mexican actress should have been cast in the role instead.
"Guys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie," A'zion began a series of statements, in which she thanked fans for "bringing this to my attention" and said she "hadn't read the book" before accepting the role.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for A24 and A'zion for comment.
Odessa A'zion just wants to be 'messy' in 'Marty Supreme,' 'I Love LA'
The Wrap first reported on Jan. 26 that A'zion would star in "Deep Cuts," an adaptation of the novel described as a love story about a pair of characters with a passion for music that examines the "nature of talent, obsession, belonging, and above all, our need to be heard."

But the decision to cast A'zion as Zoe Gutierrez quickly sparked backlash, with one fan writing on X, "A white woman playing a mexican character no thank you." Another X account devoted to sharing updates about A'zion also posted that "we do not agree with the decision to cast a white, non-Mexican actress as a character who was originally written as a Mexican woman of color."
On Instagram, A'zion told fans who were unhappy with the casting that "I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU." She also revealed she originally auditioned for the role of Percy, who is reportedly set to be played by Cailee Spaeny.

"I'm so so sorry that this happened," she wrote. "It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I'm so pissed y'all, I hadn't read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting."
She added, "I'd never take a role from someone else that's meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That's not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am NOT one of them. I can't wait to see who it ends up being."
Sean Durkin is writing and directing the movie adaptation of "Deep Cuts," which according to The Wrap will star Spaeny and Drew Starkey in the lead roles. "Marty Supreme" director Josh Safdie is producing.
