Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, has been wearing different versions of the same tie since at least the late 1990s

Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, is perhaps not the royal family member best known for his fashion. However, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth has had a secret sartorial signature for nearly 30 years.

During a Nov. 4 visit to Cardiff, Wales, to meet with a group of youth ambassadors, the 61-year-old royal donned a navy suit with a blue-and-white striped shirt. It was a fairly standard ensemble, with the addition of a poppy flower pin ahead of Remembrance Day services.

However, it was Prince Edward's tie that some royal watchers noticed as a beloved part of his wardrobe. The ruby red tie featured a whimsical repeating print of cartoon cats, some in pale blue, some in a darker shade with polka dots.

It may not immediately stand out to most, but for devoted followers of royal fashions, the prince's tie was yet another installment in a stylish saga that has now spanned nearly three decades.

Prince Edward has worn multiple versions of that same tie, in varying colors, throughout the years. The vintage re-sale website Vestiaire Collective identifies the pattern as a 1990s print by Dior Homme, the menswear branch of Christian Dior.

Edward even wore one version of the tie — periwinkle, with yellow and blue cats — for his wedding to Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, on June 19, 1999.

Some of the first photo evidence of Edward's favored ties came on Easter Sunday, 1997, when he was spotted wearing a pale green version with yellow and blue cats while attending services at St. George's Chapel in Windsor alongside his sister, Princess Anne, her husband, Sir Tim Laurence, and her daughter, Zara Phillips.

More than 20 years later, he rewore that same version of the tie to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding at the very same chapel, on May 19, 2018.

The choice of Edward's favored pattern is especially interesting given that the royal family is far better known for their love of dogs than cats. Queen Elizabeth was, of course, devoted to her pack of corgis and "dorgis," and both King Charles and Prince William have kept multiple family dogs.

Edward and Sophie also have dogs at home, as well as an unexpected pet: "We have two dogs, and we've also got a tortoise – who basically runs the house!" the prince once revealed.

He also posed with his pooches in portraits that were released to mark his 60th birthday in 2024. The images, taken by photographer Chris Jelf, were shot at his home of Bagshot Park, where Edward and Sophie live with their two children, Lady Louise Windsor, 22, (when she's not away at university!) and James, Earl of Wessex, 17.

Edward's November outing in Wales wasn't the only appearance of a cat tie in recent months. He sported a bolder version of the print — royal blue with red and blue cats — during a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May 2024.

Following King Charles' coronation and the monarch's recent decision to strip their brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, of his royal titles, Edward and Sophie have been stepping up to take on more duties as working royals.

The couple recently represented the crown on an official visit to Japan, where they met with Emperor Naruhito and other members of the royal family, and attended the 2025 Expo in Osaka. During their visit, Edward was once again spotted wearing a colorful, printed tie with cartoon animals. However, instead of his go-to cats, he opted for whales.
