George Clooney and Amal Clooneyare officially French citizens.

The couple and their twins Alexander and Ella, 8, were granted French citizenship on Saturday, Dec. 27th per naturalization decree published in French newspaper Journal Officiel.

In an interview with Esquire on Oct. 6, George expressed his desire for a change of scenery for his children.

"You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it's like—they're not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life. I was worried about raising our kids in L. A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France—they kind of don't give a shit about fame. I don't want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don't want them being compared to somebody else's famous kids," George said.

George owns a home in France, which has become the family's primary residence, in addition to their homes in England and Italy. The couple purchased their property in southern France, a former wine estate, in 2021.

Earlier this month, George praised France's privacy laws in relation to protecting his family from paparazzi on French commercial radio network "RTL."

"I love the French culture, your language, even if I'm still bad at it after 400 days of courses," George told the network in English.

Amal, who was born to Lebanese parents and raised in England, is multilingual and fluent in French.
