JoJo Siwa is opening up about her "hectic" holiday weekend.
In a TikTok video posted on Nov. 29, the "Dance Moms" star, 22, revealed she was hospitalized the day prior in extreme pain not long before performing at the Mall of America in Minnesota.
Siwa explained that over the previous few days, she started to have a "really bad" pain in her stomach whenever she would dance or even walk. This culminated in Siwa, hours before she was set to perform, laying down and having difficulty breathing. She started to feel like she was going to "black out" and "throw up," leading her mom to call 911.
JoJo Siwa arrives for the 2025 Billboard Women in Music at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, on March 29, 2025.
After being taken to the hospital, Siwa said she was in "so much pain that I couldn't communicate." An ultrasound ultimately revealed the cause: the dancer had a burst ovarian cyst that was bleeding into her stomach.
Around 1 in 10 women will develop ovarian cysts. Are they something to worry about?
"It's basically just excruciating pain, but the good news is we know what it is, and I think that brought a lot of peace of mind to me," she said. "Now I know the pain, I know what the pain is, and so I know, just take a second and it will settle, it will calm down. But any time it moves, even when I'm asleep and I roll over, it wakes me up because it hurts and cramps so bad."
According to the Mayo Clinic, ovarian cysts are sacs in the ovary or on its surface, which are common and usually go away without treatment. However, "sometimes ovarian cysts can become twisted or burst open (rupture)," which "can cause serious symptoms," the clinic notes.
"Ruptured cysts that cause mild symptoms can often be managed with pain medicines," according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. "The cyst may be looked at with an imaging test such as an ultrasound. In some cases, a ruptured cyst can cause more severe symptoms. These can include severe pain in the lower belly and bleeding. Symptoms like these need treatment right away."
Hailey Bieber shares candid post about recurring ovarian cysts: 'Right there with ya'
Siwa noted she went ahead with her performance at the Mall of America, "literally an hour" after she was in the hospital. She added that she is "doing alright" but is still "not 100%" and will need to get looked at again in a week.
JoJo Siwa visits SiriusXM Studios on May 29, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.
Actress Kate Beckinsale previously revealed in 2019 that she had been hospitalized for a ruptured ovarian cyst, which forced her to miss the Screen Actors Guild Awards. "Turns out a ruptured ovarian cyst really hurts and morphine makes me cry," the "Underworld" star said at the time. "So thankful to everyone who looked after me."
Hailey Bieber has also opened up about suffering from ovarian cysts, sharing on Instagram earlier this year, "Currently have 2 ovarian cysts 😩 If you deal with ovarian cysts, I'm right there with ya!"
