'Paranormal Activity' -
James Wan is officially on board to produce a new film in the Paranormal Activity franchise.
The as-yet untitled sequel is the first to follow 2021's Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, and will be produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.
Wan previously originated the Conjuring, Insidious, and Saw franchises.
The insidious mind behind some of the most malignant films in modern horror history is set to begin conjuring a new found footage classic.
That's right, James Wan — the genre maverick behind the Conjuring, Insidious, and Saw franchises, as well as two Aquaman movies and the 2021 standalone shocker Malignant — is joining the Paranormal Activity franchise.
Blumhouse, the famed low-budget horror house run by super-producer Jason Blum, and Atomic Monster, Wan's production company, are teaming up with Paramount, the studio behind the shaky-cam franchise, for the first new installment since 2021's Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.
Atomic Monster and Blumhouse merged last year, though they continue to operate as separate labels and develop projects independently. The addition of Wan to the Paranormal Activity franchise brings the full bearing of their new partnership together on the new film, however. Wan is producing alongside Blum and original writer-director Oren Peli. Paramount is handling worldwide distribution.

Plot details have not yet been released, but a Wednesday release announcing the new film noted that the project is a "priority development" for Paramount and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster."I've been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying," Wan shared in the release. "I'm looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found footage franchise."
Blum added, "Diving in with James for this exciting rebirth of the franchise that started it all for Blumhouse is exactly what we dreamed of when we merged with Atomic Monster... Thankfully, we're able to spend a little more than the $15,000 we had on the first movie, but one thing will remain the same – do not see it alone."
Paranormal Activity quickly entered the annals of horror history upon its 2007 release when it quadrupled its micro–production budget in a matter of days. By the end of its run, it had grossed nearly $200 million globally — an astounding profit even factoring in the film's estimated $200,000 postproduction budget.
Employing low-grade handheld cinematography, a single-location setting, and a mix of little-known actors and non-professionals, the film kicked off a new wave in the so-called "found footage" craze first popularized by 1999's The Blair Witch Project. It also spawned six sequels, which started out easily recouping their budgets, but have seen steadily declining returns.
The last entry, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, was released directly to Paramount+.

Wan is one of the most commercially successful directors alive. The combined proceeds of the Saw, Insidious, and Conjuring franchises exceed $4.5 billion, with the latter films currently holding the title of the most profitable horror franchise of all time.

The Conjuring franchise, commonly referred to as The Conjuring Universe, recently concluded with the Patrick Wilson-Vera Farmiga The Conjuring: Last Rites. Wan has been clear that this is truly the final chapter in the saga of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the demonologist and medium played by Wilson and Farmiga, respectively, in the franchise's main films. But he hasn't entirely ruled out other spinoffs.
In May, Wan told Entertainment Weekly that he's still interested in developing a sequel based around the Crooked Man, a baddie from 2016's The Conjuring 2.
"I get fans that reach out to me every now and then, begging us to make a Crooked Man movie," he said. "Just as a fan, I would love to do it one day, if I can convince the studio to do so."
