Heartbreak is inevitable, particularly in the television business. And like most years, 2025 delivered more than a few heartbreaks as networks and streamers canceled shows, forcing viewers to say goodbye to characters (and stories) they loved.
As the year winds down, we've rounded up the decisions that we still haven't gotten over.
Poker Face (Peacock)

Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale on 'Poker Face'.
Sarah Shatz/PEACOCK
We're calling bulls--- on this one. After all, season 2 of Charlie Cale's mystery-of-the-week escapades was too solid of a follow up, and ended on too much of a twisty ending to say goodbye now. Although it tied up enough threads to ultimately be a satisfying conclusion if forced, the finale also opened up the Rian Johnson-created world in a big way, with the reveal of a nemesis who could actually fib to the human lie detector heroine — and we'd argue that's a tree worth shaking a bit more. There's reason to keep those magnifying glasses at the ready, however. Though the series may be done at Peacock, EW can confirm that Johnson and co. are seeking a new home for the series, with Peter Dinklage taking up the Charlie mantle. So, it may not be too long before the game is once more afoot. —*Lauren Huff*

The ending of *Upload* was both long-awaited and too soon. The satirical sci-fi comedy from creator Greg Daniels felt like a fever dream in a world full of prequels, remakes, and sequels: an original story that is witty, endearing, and full of heart, with a cast full of actual likable characters. While the show tended to live in the shadows of Prime Video's more mainstream titles, it never failed to reach the fans that sought solace in its quirky characters, shenanigans, and storylines that felt like an omen for a reality that feels only a few steps removed. But when the end did come, the show went off the beaten path and posed new questions rather than simply answering old ones. Did it do so with its usual sharp social commentary about the dangers of technology and the surveillance and capitalist state that the characters live in? Admittedly not, but it did give us some of the best performances from its cast and a happy ending for those who needed it. In the end, the world of *Upload *only got more exciting and fascinating during its final hurrah, which makes it more tragic that fans won't get to play in it anymore. —*Mekishana Pierre*

What do you mean we'll never know what happened after Gabi Mosely (Shanola Hampton) confessed on national TV?! NBC canceled *Found* at its biggest turning point to date: Gabi admitted she's been secretly holding her childhood kidnapper hostage. Does she face prison? Does Moseley and Associates crumble? We'll never know! In addition to Gabi's fate, the episode ends with her kidnapper, Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), seemingly dying in his jail cell. Not knowing whether he's truly dead or staging an elaborate escape is a maddening question mark. Losing *Found* hurts because the show was about to embark on its most explosive chapter, and now we'll never see it. —*Alamin Yohannes*
Harlem (Prime Video)

Shoniqua Shandai, Grace Byers, Meagan Good, and Jerrie Johnson 'Harlem'.
*Harlem*'s final image, the quartet of friends walking together, should have been a promise of what was still to come, not the end. Creator Tracy Oliver has said the team learned the series was ending after most of the story had already been planned, leaving viewers with a rushed version of what should have been. Quinn Joseph (Grace Byers) was supposed to get pregnant (an arc with limitless comedy potential) and not Camille Parks (Meagan Good). Additionally, viewers will never see the initial plan for Camille reuniting with Ian Walker (Tyler Lepley) or the next stage of Angie Wilson's (Shoniqua Shandai) career. *Harlem* deserved more. —*A.Y.*

Australia's most beloved TV drama and most enduring international export was canceled four months into its initial run, revived, carried on for over three decades, canceled again, revived again, and finally, in February, canceled for good. Or so it seems. Executive producer Jason Herbison teased "tantalizing possibilities for a future chapter" after Prime Video's recent axing, the streaming giant having brought the suburban soap opera back to its loyal viewers for a mere year and a half. If any series could do it, it's this Lazarus. *Neighbors *captured hearts across the Commonwealth and beyond by giving viewers a front row seat to the feuds, trysts, loves, and losses of the residents of Ramsay Street. For 40 years, five days a week, *Neighbors* brought the drama, turned up-and-comers like Kylie Minogue and Margot Robbie into stars, and earned its place in the international TV hall of fame. —*Ryan Coleman*

ABC's splashy medical drama *Doctor Odyssey* barely got its sea legs before being canceled amid a stormy lawsuit. Starring *Miami Vice* legend Don Johnson as the genteel Captain Robert Massey, *Doctor Odyssey *made waves for its provocative inclusion of a throuple at the core of the drama. Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and lead Joshua Jackson wen't from will-they-won't-they to oh-my-god-they-will within a matter of episodes. Add to it a penile fracture, a man overboard, seismic weather events, and a surgery by flashlight, and *Doctor Odyssey* seemed bound for a second-season renewal. But not even the combined force of guest stars Angela Bassett, Shania Twain, and Amy Sedaris could save the fledgling series from capsizing over a dramatic suit claiming a culture of sexual harassment in the props department. Farewell, *Doctor Odyssey*, we hardly knew you. —*R.C.*

God forbid a TV comedy has some room to grow! Don't get me wrong, Reneé Rapp's exit was a bitter pill to swallow. The whole equilibrium of the show was thrown off without Leighton bringing her signature sass (and questionable fashion choices) to Essex College. But *Sex Lives of College Girls* managed to rally and, in a matter of episodes, find its footing with Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) finally reunited. Sure, it took a second to adjust to Kacey's (Gracie Lawrence) naivete and Taylor's (Mia Rogers) off-putting personality but eventually, everything started to gel. And more importantly, *SLOCG* had already done the work of introducing an extremely exciting set of recurring characters — it's a damn shame we won't get to see what awaits them all in their junior year. —*Shania Russell*

Luke Kirby on 'Étoile'.
Amy Sherman-Palladino's *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel* won a whopping 22 Emmys across its five seasons on Prime Video. You would think that kind of success would earn the creator some leeway on the streaming platform. Instead, her delightful new ballet series, *Étoile*, got the ax less than two months after it premiered. Co-created with her husband, Daniel Palladino, the eight-episode first season follows two ballet companies in New York City and Paris who decide to swap star performers to revive interest in the struggling art form. Like *Maisel*, and Sherman-Palladino's most popular series, *Gilmore Girls*, the series centers around a fast-talking, extremely opinionated woman: Lou de Laâge's Cheyenne. But the whole ensemble cast, including Luke Kirby, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Gideon Glick, and Simon Callow, is excellent. Hopefully, another streamer will give it an encore. —*Tiffany Kelly*

Since the very first moment that Natasha Rothwell gagged us all on *Insecure*, real ones have known that she was meant to headline a punchy comedy. That dream finally came true with *How To Die Alone*, a thoughtful dramedy about Mel (Rothwell), a broke airport employee who's forgotten how to dream. Spurred into action by her near-death experience, Mel is forced to reevaluate the ways that she's been holding herself back while unpacking her closest relationships. The 8-episode season wasn't just comedy gold, it was hopeful and insightful work that really gave Rothwell an opportunity to shine. It was baffling to learn that such a charming show had been shut down when it barely had the chance to take flight. —*S.R.*

Fans of author Robert Jordan's 14-novel epic fantasy series (completed by three-book co-writer Brandon Sanderson) have not exactly been unanimous in their praise of Prime Video's adaptation. The usual complaints about faithfulness to the written material dogged the series about a young man with magical powers who could save or destroy the world. So why was it so heartbreaking to hear of its cancellation? For one, the series actually improved season to season, so that by its season 3 finale, the promise of the coming war stirred *Game of Thrones* "Battle of the Bastards"-level anticipation among the fans who had been lucky enough to stick with the story or who discovered it as an enormously satisfying fantasy binge. Series creator Rafe Judkins took to Instagram in June with his hopes to revive the Rosamund Pike and Daniel Henney-led show elsewhere to complete the cycle. Hopefully, it won't take seven ages. —*Debbie Day*
