Toni Collette exclusively tells PEOPLE that working with Kate Winslet on the holiday family drama Goodbye June was a "dream come true"
"I admire her so much and I feel like she's the sister I never had," she says of the Titanic star

Toni Collette is opening up about her and Kate Winslet's sisterly bond.
While speaking with PEOPLE at the New York City screening of her latest film Goodbye June on Dec. 8, the 53-year-old actress admits it was a "dream come true" to finally be working alongside the Titanic star.
"I love her," Collette says of Winslet, 50, who makes her directorial debut with the Christmas family drama. "I admire her so much and I feel like she's the sister I never had."
The Hereditary star explains that it felt like they had always known each other because they've occasionally crossed paths through a mutual friend.

"I kind of felt like we had some weird parallel life going on, and we kind of had a sense that we did know each other without knowing each other," Collette continues. "It just feels normal because we already felt like we did."

Beyond gushing about the bond she and Winslet formed on set, Collette expresses that just being chosen to be a part of Winslet's directorial debut is "a big deal."
"That's a total honor," the Wayward actress emphasizes. "And she's such a good director. I mean, it's no surprise. We all knew she would be, but she really is."
"It was just the most beautiful set, such an incredible atmosphere, such an incredible sense of trust and freedom," she adds. "And she's so generous, and kind, and grounded, and funny. And honestly, none of us wanted it to end."
As for why Winslet decided to tell the story of an "intensely complicated family" for her directorial debut? She explains to PEOPLE that her son Joe Anders, 21, had written "something so extraordinary" as part of an assignment for his screenwriting course that she had no choice but to turn it into a film.
"After he'd worked on it some more, it was very clear that this film was ready to go to potential financiers, to go out to directors," she explains to PEOPLE. "At that point it really felt like ours and I just didn't want to give it to another director."
"I said to him, 'Oh my God, we can't give this away,' " she continues. " 'I don't want you to be the writer who comes on the first day and comes and says hi on the last day. I want you to be able to see this thing come to life that you've created in the hands of these extraordinary actors who all said yes.' Our wishlist of people all said yes."
Goodbye June is on Netflix Dec. 24.
