As Kelce mulls whether to return to the NFL for a 14th season, Edwards-Helaire is reminiscing about their friendship

The running back revealed that in 2024, he reassured Taylor Swift that Kelce was okay following the mass shooting at the Chiefs' Super Bowl parade

Clyde Edwards-Helaire only did what his friend and teammate Travis Kelce would have done had their roles been reversed.

Following the mass shooting during the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl parade in February 2024, Edwards-Helaire was there to reassure Kelce's now-fiancée Taylor Swift that he was okay, according to a new interview in the Kansas City Star.

Swift, on the Eras Tour and halfway around the world in Australia at the time, was awakened by her security team about the news — but she was having trouble reaching Kelce, who was ill and "overserved" at the time, columnist Vahe Gregorian reported on Friday, Jan. 9.

The Chiefs running back, 26, instead answered the phone and told the "Fortnight" singer that Kelce was safe, amid the chaos in downtown Kansas City, following the shooting that killed one person and injured 22 others.

Four months later, Edwards-Helaire's actions were not lost on Swift, who sent her jet — with Kelce onboard — back from Europe so that he could attend the Chiefs player's wedding in June 2024.

"Bro, you don't have to,'" Edwards-Helaire said he told Kelce at the time.

Kelce responded: "Nah, Taylor's already sending me. It's good."

"It was one of those things where she understood the relationship, she knows where everything stands," Edwards-Helaire said, looking back as Kelce — his "big brother" — contemplates retirement.

Edwards-Helaire has been outspoken about his feelings toward the tight end, since their friendship first blossomed when Kelce took him under his wing when he arrived at training camp as a rookie in 2020.

Five years later, in the summer of 2025, their bond was only stronger.

During training camp before the season, Edwards-Helaire was frank about how Kelce continues to look out for him.

"In a lot of those times kind of dealing with my mental health, it seemed like nobody else noticed," Edwards-Helaire told reporters. "And he did, you know?"

The Louisiana native has suffered PTSD stemming from a 2018 incident in which he and his best friend shot and killed an 18-year-old who was trying to rob them.

"It's really just mentally just not being there and it's one of those things where early on — like guys who kind of pay attention, Trav [Travis Kelce], Kadarius [Toney] at times, they can even — they'll know like ahead of time like, 'Okay, Clyde might not — he's not laughing, he's not giggling, he's not himself,' " Edwards-Helaire told reporters.

Kelce's behavior and leadership on and off the field has cast a long shadow over his teammates, including Edwards-Helaire, the running back told the Kansas City Star.

"It's one of those things that helped me establish a lot of the things that I feel like I am as a team player and a person today," he said of Kelce's impact.
