Matthew McConaughey is celebrating his mother and all of her joy.
Sharing a snapshot on his Instagram on Wednesday, Jan. 7, the Oscar winner, 56, marked the birthday of his mom Kay, who turned 94.
In the photo, Kay is laughing between her son Matthew and grandson Levi. Matthew captioned the post, "proof that 94 years of joy ages well."
Kay, known among the McConaughey family as "MaMac," has remained close to her son and grandchildren; the Lost Bus star and wife Camila share Levi, Vida and Livingston. Kay's husband James, Matthew's father, died in 1992 at age 62.

The family frequently offers glimpses of their lives together in Texas. In 2020 when Kay reached the milestone of age 90, Matthew posted a pic of her in a birthday sash with the caption, "Ma Mac McConaughey at 90 today— livin on joy, forgiveness, resistance, and 'not being able to imagine not being here.' - Happy birthday mom."
In a cover story for PEOPLE, Matthew and Kay admitted they have not always been as close as they are now.
"We were on a hiatus," Kay said of an eight-year period where she publicly shared plenty of personal information about her son.
"I'd tell her something on Sunday between son and mom, and Tuesday I'd read about it in the news or see it in the local paper. She couldn't help herself," explained the actor. But eventually, "I got stable enough with my own position and fame that I was like, you know what? My mom can say whatever the hell she wants. … Let's take the lasso off and just go for it."
After "every single film" that Matthew completes, he added, Kay says the same thing: "'Oh, so good! I see where you get it from.'" Levi, 17, confirmed this ritual: "She told me that the other day. It's gone generations."
Among Matthew's upcoming screen projects is a reunion with True Detective costar Woody Harrelson for an Apple TV+ comedy, Brother from Another Mother.
