Mary Steenburgen revealed to PEOPLE what keeps her marriage to Ted Danson going strong after 30 years

Mary Steenburgen opened up about her longtime love with Ted Danson.
The actress, 72, revealed what keeps her marriage to Danson, 77, going strong after 30 years in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at a Paley Center event in New York City.
"I don't know that we have formal rules," she admitted. "Like a lot of actors, we try not to be separated. Especially as we get older, we really don't want to be separated."

"I just did a film in Vancouver and I was up there for eight days and we were dying to see each other. Also I took our dog, so that really was hard for him. He didn't have our dog or me," Steenburgen said.
The actress noted that she and Danson don't need to have a lot of relationship rules because they "treat each other kindly."
"I want him to have the happiest life possible, so I don't think I need rules to help give him that, and he feels the same way about me," Steenburgen, who has been married to Danson since 1995, said.
The actress reunited with Danson on-screen in the second season of Netflix's A Man on the Inside. She joined the cast as music professor Mona Margadoff. The couple previously costarred in an episode of Mr. Mayor.
Season 2, which premiered Nov. 20, followed Danson's retiree-turned-private investigator Charles Nieuwendyk as he is assigned with helping Wheeler College president Jack Berenger (Max Greenfield) crack a case and must go undercover as a college professor.
The cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Gary Cole, Stephanie Beatriz, Michaela Conlin, Lisa Gilroy, Madison Hu, Sam Huntington, Jason Mantzoukas, Constance Marie, Linda Park, David Strathairn and Jill Talley.

Steenburgen also recalled her reaction to being cast in A Man on the Inside. "When they told me, there was a lot of screaming and jumping up and down," she said. "We were both dying because we were so excited to work together. It was great."
At the same event, Danson spoke with PEOPLE about sharing the screen with his real-life wife in the comedy series.
"We're both actors. We were trained the same way. We had some really good material to work with. We'd get up every morning giggling about what we get to do," he said.
