Prince Harry could bring his Invictus Games home to California in 2029.
The city of San Diego is on the new shortlist of places bidding to host Harry's adaptive sports contest for wounded, sick and injured veterans and armed forces members, alongside Aalborg (Denmark) and Daejeon (South Korea).
Harry, 41, and wife Meghan Markle, 44, have lived in Montecito, California since 2020 and raise their children children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, there, so it would represent something of a homecoming for the games.
Poignantly, the next games are set for the country of Harry's birth, Birmingham, England, in 2027.

Harry was inspired to set up the games to provide wounded and injured servicemen and women with new challenges during their recovery after seeing the United States' Warrior Games in action in Colorado. The first Invictus Games took place in London, U.K. in 2014.
After an unprecedented six bids, the 2029 field has been narrowed down to the three shortlisted options, the Invictus Games announced on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
The bids have been assessed for their vision and legacy, operational and sporting delivery, accessibility and sustainability, governance, financial robustness, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the long-term evolution of the games.

"The quality, ambition and heart shown across all the bids for the Invictus Games 2029 has been truly inspiring. An unprecedented number of applications show a strong foundation for the future of the Invictus Games, and a collective belief in the power of the Invictus Movement," Rob Owen, chief executive of the Invictus Games, announced in a statement.

"Aalborg, Daejeon and San Diego each demonstrated not only the ability to deliver outstanding Games, but also a deep understanding of how Invictus can catalyze lasting systemic change for individuals, communities and societies."
The successful bid will be announced in the summer of 2026.
Owen praised the bids from Italy, Nigeria and Ukraine which have fallen out of the process. "The decision was not easy, and so our relationship with each country will continue. Through initiatives such as Nigeria's Armed Forces Invictus Centre and the Signature Programme for Ukraine, we remain focused on growing the Invictus Movement and extending its impact well beyond a single host city."
Harry visited Ukraine this year to highlight the work the Invictus Games Foundation does in the country to aid those who have been injured in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
In the statement from the Invictus Games, San Diego was highlighted for "its identity as a global military community and gateway city connecting North America, Latin America and the Pacific Rim."
"Its proposal placed competitors and their families at the heart of the Games experience. With a coherent venue plan and a strong commercial vision, the bid demonstrated a clear ambition for building an enduring legacy in support of the Invictus Movement."
