Actress and singerZooey Deschanel is sharing details about her first date with her fiancé, HGTV star Jonathan Scott.
In the December 17 episode of Call Her Daddy, Deschanel noted that she and Scott began dating in 2019 after they met while filming an episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series. She said while she immediately thought Scott was "really cute," she was "just kind of like looking for someone to flirt with." The New Girl star explained that she was in the process of divorcing her second husband, Jacob Pechenik, the father of her children, Elsie, 10, and Charlie, 8.
"I was like going through a divorce that was like kind of under wraps because, for our kids, we're like in divorce mediation," said Deschanel, who finalized her divorce from Pechenik in 2020, during the interview.
She said that she and Scott eventually went on a "funny first date." She said after they went to dinner and did karaoke, the Property Brothers star invited her to see a home he was renovating. Deschanel said she mistakenly believed that Scott was using the house as an excuse to kiss her.
"He's like, 'I want you to see this house I'm renovating.' And I was like, 'Oh, he's going to try to kiss me.' And then he didn't. Because he's just a nerd who's trying to show me a house. And then I was like, 'Well, that went like really badly,'" said Deschanel.
She said that Scott apologized for the misunderstanding, and they shared their first kiss during their second date.

Scott and Deschanel discussed their first date during an October 2023 interview with People magazine, shortly after they announced their engagement. Deschanel said that she was impressed that Scott sent her a schedule for their first date.
"I was like, 'Oh my God. He sent me an itinerary. This is like my dream,'" said the Elf actress.
The couple also told People magazine that they immediately connected while filming the Carpool Karaoke: The Series episode. Deschanel said she enjoyed that Scott was "so nice and friendly" and willing to "be silly and fun."
Scott made similar comments about Deschanel.
"You were cute. And we both like silly," said Scott during the People interview.
