Wolfhard began starring as Mike Wheeler on the hit Netflix series in 2016, at age 13, and over the last decade, viewers have watched him and his costars become established actors (and in Wolfhard's case, also a musician and a director). Through it all, he has created lifelong friendships with his Stranger Things squad.

As for how the cast will stay connected after the series finale airs on New Year's Eve, Wolfhard told Entertainment Tonight simply: "Through texting."

He continued, "Just trying to keep in contact as much as possible. A lot of the cast actually live in the same city. ... We try to see each other every time we're [in New York]."

To celebrate his 23rd birthday on Dec. 23, 2025, see Wolfhard's sweetest friendship moments with his Hawkins crew.

Gaten Matarazzo, who portrays Dustin Henderson, and Wolfhard are so close, they were roommates for a year while filming the series' last season. In fact, they were so comfortable with each other that they let their shared space fall into disarray.

"We match each other's energy a little bit," Matarazzo explained of rooming with his "best friend" on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Dinner's on Me podcast. "We got along so well and had been so close for so long that we didn't really hold each other to a standard."

Millie Bobby Brown plays Wolfhard's love interest Eleven on screen, but off-screen, they love to poke fun at each other. After Eleven and Mike shared their first kiss, Brown affirmed that Wolfhard was a "lousy kisser" during a Vanity Fair lie detector test.

On The Drew Barrymore Show, the actor agreed with her assessment.

"The romantic way of putting it is I head-butted her," Wolfhard explained. "I was 12, so I'll excuse it. I'd probably have done the same thing if I was not on screen in front of the entire world."

In an interview with GQ, Wolfhard recalled having a panic attack while filming with Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin, who plays Lucas Sinclair. They stopped filming the scene, and his two friends embraced him.

"Gaten and Caleb, we're for life. Bonded for life," Wolfhard said. "They were like, 'Dude, we're the only people that know what it's really like."

After Noah Schnapp — who plays opposite Mike as Will Byers — came out, Wolfhard told GQ that he was "really proud" of his costar. Though they don't keep in touch 24/7, he explained that the cast functions like family.

"Do you text your cousins every day? Probably not. They're our family. We'll talk on each other's birthdays. We'll talk once in a while," he said. "But in the same way that family works, if I ever needed anything, they're there."
