Meet your Kratos of Amazon's live-action *God of War* drama series.

In one of the biggest TV castings of the new year, Ryan Hurst, a veteran of *Sons of Anarchy* and *The Walking Dead*, has officially landed the lead role in the buzzed-about video game adaptation.

Hurst was previously involved in the PlayStation games on which the show is based. He played the antagonistic role of Thor, the Asgardian god of thunder, in 2022's *God of War Ragnarök* opposite Christopher Judge as Kratos. Now the bearded Hurst will swap sides to lend his gruff voice and stature to the antihero role.

Though the *God of War* gaming series has been running since 2005, the adaptation, now spearheaded by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, will chronicle the main events of the story that began in 2018 *God of War*. That soft reboot of the franchise picked up with Kratos, a Spartan warrior who killed Ares and became the new Greek god of war in previous entries, living in Scandinavia in the realm of the Norse deities.

After the death of his wife, Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, embark on a quest to spread her ashes. The journey tests both of them, as well as their relationship to each other, as they encounter figures from Norse mythology. Kratos is tormented by his past acts, while trying to find his footing as a single father.

Amazon released an official character description of Kratos in the TV series. "Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle," it reads. "Over the course of 10 wildly successful games, Kratos vanquished mortals, creatures, and gods alike. In the process, he became an iconic character in pop culture, known for his stoic nature, unchallenged combat skills, and tragic past."

Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (*Shōgun*, *The Boys*, *Fallout*) will direct the first two episodes of *God of War*. A premiere date on Prime Video has not been announced.**
