Jay Shetty is taking a fresh approach to relationship coaching with his new Audible Original, Messy Love: Difficult Conversations for Deeper Connection.
Unlike his already popular podcast, On Purpose – which features interviews with celebrities and experts – this series places Shetty directly in the lives of real couples navigating the challenges of modern love.
"I've written about love, I've spoken about love, I've had lots of interviews on my podcast about love, but what I've not done yet, until Messy Love, was create a space where you actually got to see what the work looked like," Shetty tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Messy Love follows three couples facing unique challenges: Justin and Gladys, separated after seven years but hoping to reconcile; Amanda and Rian, long-term partners working through issues of respect, recognition and power; and Richard and Jerami, navigating disagreements over money and status.
Across 10 unscripted episodes, Shetty guides the couples through multiple coaching sessions, providing listeners with intimate access to their struggles, breakthroughs and growth.
"What you're going to listen to is so real because it wasn't overproduced to get the right answer, to get the perfect response or to make it seem smooth," Shetty says. "You see me really having to get to know these couples and giving them the space."
Building trust with the couples was an essential part of the process, Shetty explains, and it required patience and connection.
"Some people have their breakthrough in episode 3. Some of them are open from the get-go," he says, highlighting how every journey unfolds differently. Nevertheless, Shetty says he is "really grateful" to the couples for their transparency throughout the process.

"I want to acknowledge their bravery and their vulnerability, because they were so honest, so transparent, with their real experiences," Shetty shares.
"That allowed us to create these teachable moments, these learning experiences, and hopefully something that feels really resonant for everyone who will go on to listen to the full Audible Original," he adds.
"Because to me, there's just nothing like it – to really sit there with someone through their challenges and see how messy it is, how complicated it is, how nuanced it is."

Communication is one of the central themes Shetty returns to throughout Messy Love, framing it as the foundation for deeper connection rather than conflict.
"I want people to not feel alone. I want people to feel seen, heard and understood," he says, explaining that the conversations are designed to help listeners recognize themselves in the couples' experiences.
One of his favorite techniques focuses on shifting communication away from accusation, criticism and defensiveness, and toward collaboration and connection.
"We want to have difficult conversations to deepen connection," he says, noting that the goal is not to win or protect the ego, but to strengthen the relationship.

Shetty's hands-on approach in Messy Love puts his theories into practice by providing simple and practical tools that will empower communication, trust-building and emotional safety within relationships.
"I felt that it was so important to do that at this stage of evolution in my work, because I think people need to see the ideas in action," Shetty shares. "You need to see the tools, you need to see the insights, you need to see the real emotion."
All 10 episodes of Messy Love: Difficult Conversations for Deeper Connection premiered on Thursday, Jan. 22, exclusively on Audible.
