- *Masters of the Universe* is the first live-action He-Man film since 1987.
- Nicholas Galitzine stars as the beefy, sword-wielding superhero.
- Jared Leto, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, and Kristen Wiig round out the all-star supporting cast.
It's been nearly 40 years since the live-action *Masters of the Universe* film bombed at the box office, relegating He-Man and his super-powered cohort to the animation space. It's thrived there, too, with comics and adaptations (including Netflix's *Masters of the Universe: Revelation*) introducing a whole new generation to Eternia.
Are audiences ready for another crack at a flesh-and-blood He-Man? We're about to find out.
This June, director Travis Knight (*Bumblebee*) and star Nicholas Galitzine will unleash their vision of the superhero (and his pageboy haircut) on audiences with *Masters of the Universe*, a new riff on the beloved brand from Amazon MGM and Mattel Studios.
Released in 1987, the original *Masters of the Universe* starred chiseled action icon Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, with acclaimed actor Frank Langella as the villainous Skeletor and future *Friends* star Courteney Cox as heroine Julie Winston. The movie was a critical and commercial dud, but it was also a different era. Then, *Masters of the Universe* was one of the first toy-to-movie adaptations. Now, they've become a bright, shiny cog in the Hollywood machine.
So, what can we expect from *Masters of the Universe*? When does it come out? And which of He-Man's foes and allies can we expect to see on the big screen? Here's everything we know about *Masters of the Universe* 2026.**
What is Masters of the Universe about?

Nicholas Galitzine as 'He-Man' in 'Masters of the Universe'.

*Masters of the Universe* isn't attempting to reinvent the wheel.
In the original animated series, He-Man is Prince Adam, the son of the planet Eternia's rulers, who becomes the most powerful man in the universe whenever he holds the magical Sword of Power. He uses that power to protect Castle Grayskull, the source of He-Man's strength, from the skull-faced Skeletor.
Knight's movie isn't so different, though it begins with Adam (Galitzine) living on Earth, where his mother opted to hide him as a child from the evil forces overtaking Eternia.

Jared Leto to star as Skeletor opposite Nicholas Galitzine in Masters of the Universe

"After being separated for 15 years, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam back to Eternia where he discovers his home shattered under the fiendish rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto)," reads the official synopsis. "To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan/Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man — the most powerful man in the universe."
Speaking with ** last summer, Mattel exec PJ Lewis said that visiting the set gave him "goosebumps of excitement."
"The moment that stands out was seeing the Power Sword for the first time, but also being in some of the sets and seeing the visual nature from the set design — we built an incredible world, and it's gonna be really exciting for us to bring to our fans," he said.**
Is there a Masters of the Universe trailer?
The first trailer for *Masters of the Universe* introduces our hero as a comically jacked office drone consumed by, as his boss puts it, "nerd stuff and sword things." Any normal adult speaking about "magic swords that can make a man as mighty as a god" would raise a few red flags, but Adam isn't daydreaming. The sword he longs for is his ticket back to Eternia, the planet where he once lived before his mom sent him to Earth for his safety.
Soon, he's back where he belongs, navigating the ruins of Castle Grayskull and its looming stone monoliths with the help of battle-hardened companions. Skeletor only haunts the edges of the first trailer, but his presence is nevertheless felt.**
The clip ends with a shot of Galitzine cutting down baddies in the chest plate, loincloth, and boots you've surely seen on countless He-Man action figures.**
Who's in the cast of Masters of the Universe?

Galitzine leads the cast as Adam, a.k.a. He-Man. The English actor made his name as Prince Robert in 2021's *Cinderella*, then served up charming performances in the raunchy comedy *Bottoms* (2023) and rom-coms like *Red, White & Royal Blue* (2023) and *The Idea of You* (2024).
You'd be forgiven for not recognizing him, though, as he beefed up considerably to play He-Man. "There's been a lot of eating and weightlifting, a lot of stunts," he recently told W Magazine. "I'm eating about 4,000 calories a day, but the amount of physical work I'm doing, you end up hungry at the end of the day, which is quite surprising."
Idris Elba (*A House of Dynamite*) and Camila Mendes (*Riverdale*) play He-Man's allies, Man-at-Arms and Teela, respectively. They'll be joined by Morena Baccarin (*Gotham*), the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, and *Saturday Night Live* alum Kristen Wiig, who voices Roboto, a hyper-intelligent robot also capable of emotions. James Purefoy (*The Witcher*) and Charlotte Riley (*The Peripheral*) costar as the King and Queen of Eternia.
Jared Leto, the Oscar-winning actor who recently led *Tron: Ares* (2025), marshals the baddies as Skeletor. Alison Brie (*Together*) will also bewitch as the wand-wielding Evil-Lyn.**
Rumored but not confirmed is Dolph Lundgren, who played He-Man in the original live-action film. During an interview with *Extra *last October, the actor got playful when asked if he would appear in the reboot. "Maybe, yeah, you'll have to check it out when it comes out," he teased.**
Is there a Masters of the Universe release date?
*Masters of the Universe* brings the power to theaters on June 5.
