When the Kansas City Chiefs take the field on Christmas Day, they'll do so without their star starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Why is that? What happened to Mahomes?

The Chiefs' three-time Super Bowl MVP suffered a season-ending injury in Kansas City's Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes tore his ACL in the final moments of the loss that mathematically eliminated the Chiefs from the playoffs, the team announced on social media shortly after that Week 15 game.

Kansas City has since sustained only further bad luck with its quarterbacks' health in the week since. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew also sustained a knee injury in Week 16, leaving the Chiefs to rely on former practice squad quarterback Chris Oladokun.

When will Patrick Mahomes return?

Mahomes will not return in 2025.

The Chiefs' star quarterback tore his ACL in Week 15, according to the team. That ends his season and may put the start of the 2026 season in jeopardy as well.

On Dec. 15, the Chiefs announced via social media that Mahomes underwent ACL surgery performed by Dr. Cooper. The team also said, "Mahomes will begin his rehab process immediately."

Mahomes is expected to miss about 9-to-12 months, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. That timeline puts Mahomes' return at around mid-September at the earliest.

It's unclear if a significant part of the 2026 season will be lost due to the injury. Mahomes' progress through his rehab process will determine the swiftness of his return.

Mahomes shared some frustration and thanked fans in a social media post after the Chiefs' Week 15 loss that eliminated them from playoff contention.

"Don't know why this had to happen," he wrote. "And not going to lie [it] hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever."
